Each Monday we share an old Essex photo on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The postcard above is titled “Main St. Looking South, Essex, NY.” Can you reconcile this old photo with Main Street as it is today? What do you recognize? What’s different?
Take a look at what the community had to say:
Mary S Houston: I think it was still that way in 1958? Renovations had not begun.
Ben Durant: Inn & town hall. Wish I could see the east side of the street more clearly…
Deb Lansing: Love the big trees on both sides.
Scottie Ginn: The Inn is clear….
The right side of the street is far more clear in the photo. At the end of the street the bright white columns of the Essex Inn’s colonnade make the building apparent to all viewers. Also on the right, the building in the foreground is the Essex Town Hall or as it was once known Wright’s Inn (among other names). The two-story porch on the building was later removed to reveal the facade and is not there today.
According to some text on the back of the postcard that photo was taken by CW Hughes & Co. of Mechanicville, NY for Alexander’s News Room of Essex, NY. The photo was taken circa 1940s.
