Have you ever seen the vintage postcard pictured above before? Do you recognize the location? Could you guess the date it was taken (before noting the date at the bottom)? The postcard is labeled with: “Split Rock Light-On-Lake-Champlain, N.Y. Copyright: 1907 By B. Barker Burlington, VT.” So if you did not recognize the location as Split Rock by sight the label declares it for you.

However our viewers guessed right away:

Dianne Lansing: My guess is Split Rock.

Dianne Lansing: Hey…I didn’t see the caption at the bottom.

Christine Herrmann: Pretty good guess, Dianne!

Can you spy Split Rock Lighthouse rising above the trees in the center? The original tower was constructed in the 1830s but this appears to be the limestone tower that still stands today—that replacement tower was built in 1867. Though decommissioned in 1928, Split Rock Lighthouse was recently lit up again as an official maritime navigation beacon. Today the lighthouse is also a vacation rental. (Visits by appointment only.) Learn more about it here on the site run by its current owner.
