Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Have you seen this old postcard before? I’m sure most everyone recognizes this landmark. It’s the Split Rock Lighthouse! If you didn’t recognize it take a look at the title that backs up the claim: “Split Rock Light, Lake Champlain, N.Y.”
Here’s a couple comments we’ve received from the community:
Ann Dickinson: Is that lighthouse still there?
Dwayne Cross Jr.: Split Rock Lighthouse!
Yes, this tower is still standing today! The original tower was constructed in the 1830s, but a new one (the one that appears in the photo) replaced it in 1867.
We discovered this postcard in the digital collections of the New York Public Library. The publisher was identified as Detroit Publishing Company, and it was dated c. 1898 – 1931.
We’ve shared several old photos of the lighthouse before — see a few examples in the “related articles” section below!
Notice anything that’s changed in the landscape? Have any other thoughts to share? Please leave a comment.
