We invited you to play Vintage Essex Trivia when we posted this old Essex stereoview on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page last week, and we asked the community to tell us what they think of the photo and to share any knowledge of the scene.
The focus of the photo is a pair of men and a horse near a stone wall. Do you recognize the village of Essex in the background? Some of the community was unsure if it was. Take a look at a few comments that we received about the photo:
Robert Hammerslag: I’ve never seen this one before. Taken from Block House Farm area?
Dianne Lansing: Is that really Essex? How about Westport? Check the road going ‘south’ near the right hand side of the photo. Especially since Bob H. has never seen it before!
Essex on Lake Champlain: Yes, Bob, though not quite that far north.
This photo was taken from the north of Essex and overlooks a portion of Lake Champlain bordering the town to the left. What do you think? Do you disagree? Agree? Point out what you see in the photo as evidence and leave a comment!
What is a Stereoview?
We’ve been sharing several stereoviews on the blog, but if this is the first that you are viewing, then you may be wondering– just what is a stereoview? Historically, photographers produced these double image cards to be used with a stereo viewer. The device gave the appearance of 3-D when you looked through it, hence the mirroring images which would line up with each eye to create the illusion.
We hope you’re enjoying these vintage images! Keep your eyes on the Essex on Lake Champlain blog for more.
