John Cullen is currently hosting several paintings in the Adirondack Art Association‘s gallery. He has a very unique and I believe beautiful style.
Cullen has known he wanted to be an artist since the age of eleven. He has studied at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Art, NYU, and Pratt Institute, and has since been a professional artist and art teacher (secondary and college level) for all of his adult life.
Cullen works from his imagination or with photographs as reference. He claims that his inspired work comes to him in an almost mystical manner. This inspiration leaves fast, but Cullen manages to create his pieces quickly and so rarely misses an opportunity to capture the moment in art. He describes these artistic epiphanies as follows:
Concepts will come about through sheer force of labor and work and then all of a sudden I’m in a new zone which is both emotional and spiritual. This is hard to put into words. It must be experienced. It leaves me with a sense of insight and revelation. (Abstractvenues)
Though he has worked in several mediums he prefers to paint with acrylics in imposto manner and with the use of colored pencils and a sponge to create textures.
I would describe my art as abstract impressionistic with the subject matter derived from scenes of land and water. (Abstractvenues)
