Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that the enslaved African Americans of Galveston, TX, were freed – nearly two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The next year, the people of Galveston commemorated that day as Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom. Since then, it’s been observed in communities and states as a holiday, but officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
The event is free with a suggested donation of $8 for dinner. BYO Picnic blankets or folding chairs. Indoors in the event of rain.
