Rick Dalton, Essex resident and CEO of College for Every Student (based in Essex, NY), was recently featured in an article appearing in Strictly Business written by Meg LeFevre.
The article focuses on Dalton’s civic involvement in Essex and beyond, particularly concerning his educational non-profit organization College for Every Student (CFES). CFES works with 200 rural and urban schools across the country and one in Ireland and is devoted to helping underserved students do well in high school and to attend and succeed in college.
In interview style we learn more about Dalton and receive some educational and professional advice. We also learn a bit about his history in Essex, how he’s sought to improve it (and the world), and some thoughts to the future.
The article ends with Dalton’s reply to the question: “What is your vision for Essex?” And here is his answer:
Lights on on Main Street 12 months a year. Remember that Essex, 250 years ago, was the biggest seaport on Lake Champlain. When the lake was the highway between New York City and Montreal this was a happening place. Do we want it to be that happening? I don’t know, but we want it to be economically viable. And what does that mean? It’s broadband, a little bit of retail, tourism, more young families, people walking up and down the street, folks coming in and out of the Inn, a place for social gatherings so that we are in the winter what we’ve been in the summer.
