“New York Governor Andrew Cuomo pays a visit to the North Country and SUNY Plattsburgh to sell his 142-billion dollar budget now before lawmakers and his push for ethics reforms. Willie Janeway, Executive Director of the Adirondack Council joins us to talk about proposals in the Governor’s budget plan that will impact the Adirondack Park and North Country.” (YouTube)
If you missed Willie Janeway’s extended roundtable discussion last week about Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed budget, take a moment to watch the video above. If you’re too rushed to learn why the Adirondack Council is “bullish” on the 2015 budget proposal, identifying specific pro-Adirondack proposals embedded in the 500+ page document, here’s the skinny version as introduced by Janeway.
It’s an impressive budget… There’s a lot of real pro-Adirondack proposals in there that we like. But what we like on a macro-level is the vision that it articulates for the Adirondack Park, this nationally significant treasure, that’s clean water and wildlife and wilderness in hamlets. And the vision part of the budget… articulates a vision of better protecting the backcountry, better investing in hamlet development, putting in millions if not billions for infrastructure for things like broadband. So that’s really good. When you get down into the details of the budget we see a ten million dollar increase in the State’s Environmental Protection Fund and that is the core dedicated fund, more money for land acquisition and more for taking care of the land that we already have, more money for invasive species and also more money for grants to communities to do smart-growth planning. So there’s a lot of positive there. There’s a few issues that we’re going to try to fix in the legislature, but it’s a very pro-Adirondack budget that Governor Cuomo put out. ~ Willie Janeway
