On May 11th, Champlain Area Trails (CATS) marked its 11th Grand Hike, a tradition that began in 2014 and has since seen a steady increase in participation. This year, an impressive turnout of over 377 hikers, including families with young children, embarked on the 14-mile trek from Essex to Westport through the stunning landscapes of the Champlain Valley, showcasing the event’s growing appeal.
The 2024 hike through forests, fields, and on country roads emphasized the enthusiasm people have for adventure and their unwavering support for CATS’ mission to maintain and expand over 100 miles of trails. The event fosters a sense of community and serves as a vital fundraiser for trail upkeep and land conservation efforts.
Chris Maron, Executive Director of CATS, said, “This year’s Grand Hike was a resounding success, demonstrating the powerful bond between nature and community. We’re deeply grateful for the continued support and happy to see so many new faces join us in celebrating the beauty of the Champlain Valley and the vision of town-to-town trails.”
Participants traveled from various locations, including the Capital District and as distant as Helena, Montana, to partake in this year’s hike. The broad reach of the event, with people coming from near and far, highlighted its regional and even national appeal. Among the memorable moments was a family from Saratoga and the Albany area, who, inspired by a public radio station, chose to spend Mother’s Day in this uniquely memorable and meaningful way.
Dan Keegan, CATS’s Board Chair, reflected on the day, stating, “The overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants about the trail conditions, the vibrant after-party at Winton’s 1898 Tavern, and the sense of camaraderie really underscores what the Grand Hike is all about. It’s a testament to the dedication of our volunteers, landowners, and sponsors who make this event possible.”
Mark your calendars for May 10th, 2025, for the next Grand Hike. With the community’s continued support, CATS is excited to host an even more spectacular event next year and invites both new and returning hikers to join.
