Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Do you recognize this ferry? What can you tell us about it? When do you think this photo was taken? Where do you think it was taken? (Hint: This isn’t Essex, NY.)
Here’s what the community had to say:
Christine Herrmann: I think this was mid-late 1950s and the ferry is the Adirondack. Looks like it was taken from Charlotte. I recognize the red & white outboard! It was owned by friends who had a camp next to the Charlotte ferry dock and who visited us often at Sandy Point in Essex.
Bob Craft: Port Kent. Trembleau Point on the right (South). Skyline is Vermont. Too far away to be a view of the Adirondacks from Charlotte.
Mary Wade: Looks like the Port Kent dock.
Chuck Moynan: Port Kent.
Becky Hance: Adirondack for sure.
Bryan Nelson Elder: This is Port Kent!
This is the Port Kent ferry dock and that is the Adirondack ferry pulling into the dock. The postcard is dated to the 1950s. Everyone made good points. Below you can see the back of the postcard and learn more.
The text on the back of the postcard reads:
“M.V. Adirondack Most Scenic Ferry Crossing in North America. One of the well-appointed and comfortable auto and passenger ferries of the Lake Champlain Transportation Co., Inc., operating on the Streamline Ferry route between Burlington, Vt. and Port Kent N.Y. on Lake Champlain. Refreshments, Gifts, and Souvenirs are available in the Passenger Lounge and Sun Deck.”
