Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The last image we shared is shown above, although we cropped off its captions!
What do you recognize in this vintage photograph? Any landmarks? Where is this? When do you think the photo was taken?
Here’s just a bit of what the community already had to say:
Terrence DeMaso: Looks to be taken between Westport and Basin Harbor looking north at rock cut.
Jean White Dickerson: Was my first thought too
Sara Mehr: Westport palisades
Ike Tyler: Barn Rock
Jim Carroll: Looking NW into Barn Rock Harbor about 1/2 mile off Basin Harbor
Bill Mock: It looks like the westside of willsboro bay
Gail Baird: Willsboro Bay, NY side to west (left), train tunnel goes through the large rock looking north towards Montreal!
Brian Passaglia: Not Willsboro bay. Deff not. It’s just north of the Westport boat launch. Beautiful spot. Seen people jump from those. Just north of that are gorgeous ledges. Beautiful area of the lake before it opens up huge a few more miles north. Love Champlain!!!
Dianne B Lansing: My guess is also Barn Rock.
Ruthie Nye: BARN ROCK HARBOR
The community guesses as to the location varied but several recognized the landmark Barn Rock! Have you ever seen it? Did you recognize it?
The back side of the postcard is below. The postage stamp dates to 1908, so the photograph likely dates to that year or shortly prior. It was sent in Whitehall to Mineville I believe. Click the image to enlarge and you can read the note on the postcard that mentions having a fine time on the lake!
