Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The last image we shared is shown above!
Do you recognize this Essex house? Where is it located? What does it look like today? When do you think this photo was taken? Who were the Goatsworths?
Here’s what the community already had to say:
Ken Hughes: Wow! What a beautiful porch. Where is this house? I’m having difficulty placing it.
Todd Goff: To give women more credit I’d say it’s the Mary Ann Gould house.
Do their insights help? Even I’m not completely sure…but picture the home without those shrubs and trees and without the porch. The shape of the home, facade, and windows make me believe that this is Rosslyn. William D. Ross built that home for his bride Mary Ann Gould in the 1820s on what is sometimes called merchant row on the stretch of Lake Shore Road on the north side of Essex just before the ferry dock. Do you agree or think this is a different house?
The backside of the postcard has a message on it, but I’m unable to read most of it. However, the post stamp is dated June 25, 1915. That means the photograph on the front likely dates to that year or a few years prior.
