Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The last image we shared is shown above, although we cropped off its caption!
Take a look at this old postcard! What do you recognize? Where is this? When you do you think it dates to?
Here’s what the community already had to say:
Bill Mock: This is the bridge at Crown Point New York the bridge crosses Lake Champlain into Vermont
Scott Sayward: 1940s era postcard?
The postcard’s caption reads: “New Lake Champlain Bridge From Fort St. Frederic, Champlain Memorial Monument at Right.” Fort Saint-Frédéric was a French fort built on Lake Champlain in Crown Point, New York, which if we didn’t know the location of the bridge tells us where it is. You can learn more about the fort when you click here.
So this is the bridge in Crown Point, NY connecting to Vermont. Although it is the original bridge shown, since the bridge in place now opened in 2011. The original Champlain Bridge was opened in 1929 and was in use until 2009. Since the caption notes this as the “new” bridge this postcard likely dates closer to the bridge’s early years, so it’s possible it is from the 1930s or early 40s.
This postcard was never sent, so there is no message or date on the back side of the postcard. A notation on the back does tell us this was printed by/for CW Hughes and Co. of Mechanicville, NY and it is a genuine Curteich-Chicago “C.T. Art-Colortone” postcard.
