Publishing Genius is releasing a children’s book and a collection of very short stories this June
Publishing Genius (est. 2006), a small literary press based in Westport, NY, will release Rocks: What Are They Doing, a heartwarming children’s book by artists Christine Sajeck and Michael Mäke, and The Thing I Was Trying to Tell You, a richly funny and playful collection of flash fiction (or very short stories) by legendary microfiction writer Joseph Young. They will celebrate with a series of events in Westport and Essex, NY:
1. On June 28, Sajecki and Mäke will host a child-centered reading and party at the Essex Quarry Trail and Nature Preserve in Essex, NY.
2. On June 29, at 10am, Young will lead a writing workshop in partnership with “This Will Be Fun,” the Whitcombs’ art exhibit of Ted Cornell’s work. The generative workshop, which will take place at Whitcomb’s in Whallonsburg, NY, is based on writing prompts related to Cornell’s sculptures and paintings.
3. On June 29, at 7pm at Snowfort (6592 Main Street, Westport), Publishing Genius will host a reading and art exhibition featuring work from both books. Participants in the workshop will be invited to share their own writing as well.
Snowfort, where the evening release party will be held, is the former E.W. Adams Hardware Store. It was purchased recently by Adam and Amy Robinson, who are working to convert the building into a bookstore and cooperative learning center for all ages.
Rocks is a welcoming call to pay attention to even the simplest things around you, noting affectionately that “they are for you.” It’s a 28-page, full-color book made from original paintings and hand-cut letters. It is certain to appeal to adults as well as children.
The Thing I Was Trying to Tell You was called “breezy, thundering, emotionally relevant, formally inventive” by poet Mark Leidner. Excerpts have been published in Wigleaf, New World Writing, Center for Humans and Nature, and more.
The books, which will be officially released on June 25, will be available at the event or can be preordered at PublishingGenius.com. More information on all the events can be found at SnowfortBooks.com.
