Summer may be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean that Adirondack Shakespeare Company is settling down. In fact, the troupe is gearing up for its second Autumn Season just weeks after bringing the curtain down on its most ambitious Summer Festival to date.
2014 saw ADK Shakes bring the Park a total of five full productions by William Shakespeare as well as an original play for children penned by the Company’s Executive Director, Patrick Siler. But the year isn’t over yet. Two more productions are about to get underway: Macbeth and The Taming of the Shrew.
“What’s special about this fall is that we are beginning a year-long celebration of our Fifth Anniversary Season,” says Siler. “Macbeth is one of the titles that we produced in our very first summer in Schroon Lake, and we are very excited to revisit each one of those show’s over the next year.”
In addition to Macbeth, next summer the group will also perform two other titles from their inaugural season: Romeo and Juliet and As You Like It.
Shakespeare is not just rehashing old material though. Paired with Macbeth this autumn is a play the Company has never touched: The Taming of the Shrew.
“Most people think of Taming of the Shrew as a battle-of-the-sexes comedy. They’re not wrong, but we’re going to be focusing less on the play’s gender issues and more on it’s blatant theatricality,” says Tara Bradway, who will be conducting the production. “We are including the frame story of the play, which is rarely performed. Christopher Sly, a drunk beggar, falls asleep after a night of hard drinking and wakes up to find himself dressed as a lord and about to watch a play. That play is Taming of the Shrew. Including Sly makes this a completely different story.”
Macbeth and The Taming of the Shrew will be on tour from October 3-12 throughout Adirondack Park with performances at the Whallonsburg Grange, the Upper Jay Arts Center, Tannery Pond Community Center, Indian Lake Theater, the Bullhouse Restaurant in Chestertown, the Strand Theater in Schroon Lake and more.
