On October 30, College For Every Student launched its GetReadyNow app, supported by the GE Foundation. The app coincides with the First Lady’s Reach Higher Career App Challenge, that aims to help students navigate education and career pathways.
During the conference, four hundred educators, corporate leaders, and students from 30 states and Ireland were the first to test the app that allows high school-aged students to compete with their peers and score and improve their college and career readiness through questions and quizzes.
“The GetReadyNow app really helps me and my peers think about our future,” said Jodena Michel, an 11th grade student at Brooklyn Institute for Liberal Arts. “It’s a fun way to prepare for college and think about the steps we need to take for our career goals.”
GetReadyNow is a free app that challenges students to answer ten randomly selected questions about colleges and careers. Each response is timed and scoring is based on accuracy and quickness of response.
“It’s important for us to connect with our students,” said CFES President & CEO Rick Dalton. “If we are going to help them reach their potential, we need to meet them where they are.”
Students can post their scores to a Leaderboard through the app, challenge their friends, and attempt to beat high scores.
“The GetReadyNow app is the first in a series of tools the GE Foundation intends to launch under its global Developing Skills program,” said Kelli Wells, Director for Education and Skills for the GE Foundation. “Our goal is to empower students ages 14-21 to take the appropriate pathways to careers that will bring them success and prosperity.”
In addition to direct support for its current group of 25,000 students, CFES offers an array of online training and services.
“We are already developing an update that will add 1,0000 more questions to the quiz game and most of the questions will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers,” added Dalton. “This is an exciting time for us and we are thrilled to be able to offer this resource to our students.”
