KIDS ~ N ~ PEACE
Helping our children choose peaceful solutions with Jesus as our guide.
Where: St. John’s Church, Essex, NY
When: Sundays at 10-11 am, January 17-February 7 and April 3-24
Children are bombarded with violent solutions to everyday problems. Superheroes save the day by destroying the enemy. TV characters get shot at every turn. Even the Road Runner manages to trick Wile E. Coyote into temporary annihilation.
St. John’s Church in Essex believes children can learn another way to deal with conflict by following the wisdom of the greatest teacher of all times, Jesus. Offering an eight week course for children in grades K through 5 called “Kids ~ N ~ Peace”, the church invites all area children to participate.
The curriculum encourages children to turn away from the cultural belief that violence will save us and learn creative responses to end fighting, curb bullying, listen and be listened to, and stand firm or be flexible depending on the circumstances.
The first four weeks will be held Sundays at 10:00 to 11:00 am on January 17 through February 7. The second four weeks will run from April 3 through April 24. Topics to be covered include: creation may be good but not everything we do is good, violence will not save us, Jesus’ way is neither fight nor flight but standing firm and getting creative, anger can be good if we channel it right, learning empathy, acting creatively when someone is mean, dealing with bullies, and prayer that leads to courage, apologies and forgiveness.
