I’ve been fascinated by plant life for a long time, but because I’m fairly new to the Adirondacks, I’m discovering new plants that I haven’t seen before. Can anyone identify what this one is? We had them growing all over our weed-infested gardens all this past summer. They look a little like sunflower leaves, but the blossoms are quite small. When the seed capsule matures and then opens, the seeds inside look somewhat like small apple seeds.
Invasive velvetleaf. Abutilon theophrasti
Monica, it’s called Velvet Weed. It’s a noxious, invasive weed that you should pull up whenever you find it!
Thank you both for your expert plant identification. I can see why this one is considered invasive. There are so many seeds in each little packet! We’re going to pull them all up asap.
