
Kathryn Cramer‘s The Trail Was Soft and Mossy is another one of the stories entered in this round of the Champlain Area Trails (CATS) writing contest. If you haven’t yet, you should go vote in the contest!
This is the story of a little misadventure Cramer and her two children have while mistakenly hiking on the wrong CATS trail with some shoe choice mishaps adding to the situation.
Cramer use of dialogue in her story draws the reader further into the action and reveals the entertaining personalities of Cramer and her daughter.
Here is one of the (several) humorous moments in her story after the realization that they are on the wrong CATS trail arrives, and the shoes have caused their problems.
“I told you we were on the wrong trail!”
“And I didn’t listen. Well, children, we have two alternatives. Either we walk back the way we came, or you guys have to sit here by the side of the road while I hike all the way back, and I pick you up in the car. Since I don’t want to leave you here in the woods by the side of the road, we have to hike back.”
“But mommeee, I have blisters! And my bandaids fell off!”
I took off my hiking boots and socks. I put my socks on Liz, and then had Peter give her his sneakers. Then I put my hiking boots on Peter, muttering under my breath about “next time” and “hiking boots.
