Champlain Area Trails (CATS), an accredited land trust, is inviting the public to join in celebrating National Bird Day by taking part in a guided birdwatching walk at Point Au Roche State Park on Friday, January 5th, from 9 am to 11 am.
Point Au Roche State Park Nature Center and CATS are collaborating on this event. Kristin Collins, an environmental educator at Point Au Roche State Park Nature Center, and Torey Patenaude, the Community Engagement and Outreach Manager for CATS, will lead the walk. The walk will cover approximately 2 miles at a comfortable pace across terrain mostly level. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and a field guide if they have one, though some binoculars will be available to borrow. Birders of all skill levels are welcome to join the walk.
Point Au Roche State Park, located in Plattsburgh, New York, encompasses 856 acres of forests, wetlands, and shorelines along Lake Champlain. Over 200 species of birds have been spotted in the park, including warblers, flycatchers, vireos, and woodpeckers. The park’s diverse habitat and location along the Atlantic Flyway make it an excellent spot for birdwatching.
“CATS is dedicated to making trails, protecting land, connecting people with nature, and promoting economic vitality in the Champlain Valley,” said Torey Patenaude, Community Engagement and Outreach Manager at CATS. “This event is an opportunity for people to enjoy the park’s natural beauty and learn about the various species of birds that call it home.”
CATS, founded in 2009, has created over 78 miles of trails, protected 983 acres of land, and hosted numerous hikes, outdoor education outings, and volunteer events, attracting thousands of visitors to New York’s Champlain Valley.
