
Champlain Area Trails, a non-profit dedicated to creating and maintaining trails, protecting land, connecting people with nature, and promoting economic vitality in New York’s Champlain Valley, is excited to announce its upcoming Grand Hike signature event on Saturday, May 9th at 10 am.
This all-weather event offers hikers and walkers of all ages and abilities the opportunity to immerse themselves in the stunning natural landscapes of the Champlain Valley. Participants will board buses at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport, NY, which will transport them to the starting line. The hike will begin at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall in Whallonsburg, NY, and end at the Twin Valleys Outdoor Education Center in Lewis, NY, with a post-event celebration featuring a live band, food and drinks for purchase, and information about local organizations.
“Our Grand Hike is the perfect way for both locals and visitors to experience the beauty and wonder of New York’s Champlain Valley,” said Arin Burdo, Executive Director of Champlain Area Trails. “Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking to enjoy a stroll, this event has something for everyone.”
With distances ranging from 2 to 16 miles, the Grand Hike provides hikers and walkers with the flexibility to customize their experience. Shuttle services and shortcuts will be available to help participants choose the route that best suits their fitness level and interests. Along the way, hikers and walkers will enjoy four rest stops with snacks, water, and portable restrooms.
Champlain Area Trails has created and maintained over 100 miles of trails, conserved 3,000 acres of land, and hosts numerous hikes, outdoor education outings, and volunteer events throughout the year. By connecting people with nature, Champlain Area Trails promotes the economic vitality of New York’s Champlain Valley while preserving its natural beauty for generations to come.
“The Grand Hike is a celebration of the incredible work that Champlain Area Trails has done to make the Champlain Valley more accessible and enjoyable for everyone,” said Burdo. “It’s a chance for us to come together as a community and experience the magic of this special place.”
Registration for the Grand Hike 2026 is now open. The $45 registration fee includes an event t-shirt and on-route amenities such as water, snacks, shuttle services, and portable restrooms. All proceeds will support Champlain Area Trails’ ongoing trail building, land conservation, and outdoor education efforts. The price will increase on May 4th.
