If you’ve been to the Essex Post Office recently then you probably noticed the new additions. In the lobby to the right of the office window are eight new large mailboxes. They were installed on Tuesday.
These new boxes (or maybe they should be called lockers?) will be used for packages. If you do not pick up your package before the Post Office window closes (see below for new hours), then your package(s) will be placed in one of the large boxes for you to retrieve.
How It Works
If you do not pick up your package before the window closes, then it will be put into one of the new large mailboxes, and the key to it will be placed in your regular mailbox along with your mail. So if you find a key in your mailbox go to the corresponding locker (the key will be marked with the box number) to pick up your package(s). After you’ve unlocked it, the key will remain in the lock and the postmaster will get the key out the next day.
Post Office Window Hours Change

As of May 16, 2015, the post office window will be operating under a new schedule on weekdays. The window will close for lunch from noon to 1:00 pm and it will close for the day at 3:15PM. The lobby will remain open and will close at 5:00 PM (its usual time). However, there will be an automatic door-lock set to lock the door to the Post Office at 5:00 PM.
Here’s the full Essex Post Office Schedule as of May 16, 2015:
Post Office Open
Monday – Friday: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Saturday: 8:00 am -12:00 pm
Post Office Window Open
Monday – Friday: 8:15 am – 12:00 pm; 1:00 pm – 3:15 pm
Saturday: 8:00 am -11:30 am
Note: Mail placed in the outgoing mailbox in the lobby after 3:15 pm will be processed the next day. If it’s after 3:15 pm and you want your mail to go out on the same day, it is suggested that you put your mail in the blue mailbox outside, which will be picked up for delivery at 4:30 pm. Mail placed in it after that time will be processed the next day.
