I am one lucky girl. I lived in a small town in Dutchess County and spent my summers on Lake Champlain at my grandparent’s cabin in Willsboro. Those years made me appreciate small town living and the peaceful way of life that the area brings to others who go there to rejuvenate and unwind.
Essex was my favorite town to visit. I loved walking through the streets, taking in all of the history and charm. We’d visit the shops, and my favorite store was the Book Emporium. I could sense all of the “ancient” history that awaited me…I’d browse through books, sit up in the loft and look out at the lake, wishing I could stay there forever.
Later, we’d have some lunch out on the dock and then take a ferry ride. The perfect ending to our visit to Essex.
On the drive back to the cabin, I’d look at the old houses, wondering what kind of stories the previous owners could tell. I dreamed of owning one of these houses. To me, Essex would be the perfect place to live. Surrounded by that small town feel. A happy, relaxed vibe. Being surrounded by a community of people doing what they loved and living a much simpler life.
I haven’t been back since 1992, but I hope to return someday soon. Thanks for sharing all that you have to offer with those of us who dream of being there!
