“Collections Care 101” will be held at the Ticonderoga Historical Society on Monday, May 9, 2016 from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm. Registration begins at 9:00 am and a tour of the museum follows the workshop. This day-long workshop covers the basics of collections care and is presented by Stacy Pomeroy Draper, Rensselaer County Historical Society (RCHS) Curator; and Kathryn Sheehan, RCHS Registrar and Rensselaer County and City of Troy Historian. John Diefenderfer, Archivist with the New York State Archives, addresses the care of historical records.
Museums, libraries and historical groups often collect a wide assortment of historical material with responsibility for its long-term care. In addition to safely handling the material, a system is needed for managing the collection for research purposes, developing exhibits and creating programs. This hands-on interactive workshop includes a sharing of specific challenges you face with your collection – and brainstorming solutions.
The workshop is sponsored by Lakes to Locks Passage, a nonprofit organization with the mission to build stewardship of the region’s rich historic, cultural, recreational and natural resources. This program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
The Ticonderoga Historical Society is located at 6 Moses Circle, Ticonderoga, NY. The workshop is free and open to all. Lunch will be provided for $10. Registration is required as space is limited to 25 participants. To register, please contact Margaret Gibbs at mgibbs@lakestolocks.org.
