At our Depot Theatre stage show performance last July we told stories about Essex, NY, and asked the audience to draw what came to mind when thinking of Essex. The doodle above was submitted by Jim Carlisle. It shows four objects that represent Essex to him.
The ice cream cone is no doubt from the Essex Ice Cream Cafe along Main Street. The sailboat is a common sight on Lake Champlain in summer seen from any lakefront Essex property or roadway.
Top center is a doodle of the only stoplight in the entire hamlet! We’ve received a few doodles that have featured that stoplight. Take a look at another doodle that shows a fun interpretation of the stoplight! Funnily enough all the doodles we’ve seen show the traditional three vertical lights, but the stoplight in Essex is a single 3-way (facing three roads) blinking red light. I guess the other is much more common that it’s instinctual to draw a stoplight that way!
The Essex-Charlotte ferry is another common doodle that we’ve received. It’s such an important part of the area’s transportation network that most people know about it, and of course it’s a common sight travelling back and forth across the lake every day!
We’d love for you to submit your Essex-inspired doodles! There is no right or wrong way to doodle, but take a look at some doodling tips if you’re nervous. And remember we can post your doodles anonymously if you’d prefer!
