Temperatures are starting to swing subtly up, and yesterday a spot or two of sunshine even tempted us to dream of spring. And despite the impending threat of more snow on Thursday and Friday, I am thinking of springtime and seedlings.
The Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District is selling bare-root tree and shrub seedlings that will be available for pickup in Westport at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Center on April 19. Most of the seedlings are intended to assist in “erosion control, wildlife habitat improvement, windbreaks and reforestation, although some groundcovers and wildflower are also available… All tree and shrub seedlings are sold as bare-root stock. They are not potted, nor balled in burlap; such as you’d expect to buy from a commercial nursery.” (Denpubs.com)
If you would like to place a seedling (and/or seed) order, download an order form on the Essex County SWCD website and submit by the March 8 deadline. For additional information you can contact Essex County Soil and Water Conservation District directly.
