We were so excited about our last Essex Blog Giveaway that we decided to begin the next one today! Enter and you have a chance to win the prize: a hat inscribed with “Essex on Lake Champlain!” It’s easy to win. You just have to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
How to Enter

We gave a brief announcement about the new giveaway earlier today:
It’s time for another challenge, but this time we let the cat out of the bag early. We included the colorized photograph above (courtesy of Shirley LaForest) to validate that Rosslyn bathhouse once stood on the shoreline just north of the boathouse. That same postcard reveals several other intriguing elements including a yacht and one or two (maybe more?) buildings that are no longer visible in Essex. I’m stumped on at least one building which was either removed or dramatically remodeled. Can you help decipher this dated Essex waterfront view? All blog/Facebook commenters will be entered in a new drawing. Details soon! (Essex on Lake Champlain)

Look at the image above. This vintage postcard shows us a section of Essex shoreline across the road from Rosslyn. What else can you tell us about it? When do you think the photo was taken? Can you identify any of the buildings? Can you name the yacht that is docked close to the shore? It’s a famous one! (Or at least a recognizable icon in Essex waters.)
We also made this image our cover photo of the week on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page. See it there too!
To be entered in this giveaway simply comment on this post or over on our Facebook page cover photo. Tell us anything you can about the photo. You don’t have to be right, you just have to try! Facts, guesses, observations, thoughts…We want to know what you think!
We will randomly select a winner from all of the commenters and announce the winner next Monday, June 24. So be sure to comment before then for your chance to win an Essex hat!

The Cestral yacht? The other building in front of the Nobles/Schultz house? Before my time. 80+ years ago. Tilly
Ah-ha, we have a winner! The yacht was indeed known as Kestrel, a 62 foot steam powered yacht originally owned by Samuel Keyser. According to Morris Glenn it is now owned by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority and is used during the warm months for tourists. As for the other building — the large mysterious building in the middle — I too am curious. Thanks, Tilly for helping out!
Sorry I can’t answer your questions. However, I am intrigued by what appears to be a tall industrial chimney on the point at the far left. What is it?
Thanks, Leonard, for commenting. The chimney on the left is the former nail factory (located in current Beggs Park) that suffered an infernal fate. Hoping to have a related post out this summer.
