A fun dip in the lake and a fundraiser is a great way to welcome spring in Essex, NY! Polar plungers splashed into the 37-degree Lake Champlain waters in Essex on Sunday, April 7 (Press Republican).
Passersby may have thought these swimmers were crazy, but they braved cold temperatures and took the plunge into Lake Champlain to raise money for a local healthcare provider, Planned Parenthood of the Mohawk-Hudson Region.
Twenty jumpers met the chilly Lake Champlain waters as about fifty spectators cheered and took photos on shore. Through fundraising of the divers and other friends of Planned Parenthood they raised $3,300 at this event (Denpubs)!
“For many people, our healthcare facilities are their only way to receive their regular health screenings,” said [Linda] Scharf. “The money we raise can help people who otherwise can’t afford the co-pay. People hear Planned Parenthood and sometimes only think of birth control, but we are a healthcare facility and we want to make sure everyone who needs our services can get them. We couldn’t do that without the help of our supporters.” (Denpubs)
If you didn’t participate and take a dip this month, then there is always next year. Of course, you don’t have to take the cold swim. Donations are always accepted, just send a check made payable to: Planned Parenthood Mohawk Hudson (or PPMH) and mail to: Polar Plunge at PPMH, 1040 State Street, Schenectady, NY 12307.
