With the discontinuation of the round trip tickets commuters on Lake Champlain’s ferries might be interested to know they have an option other than buying a one way ticket every trip. How would you like to have a handy little card you can just give to the teller and swipe when you want to cross the lake? Well, LCT calls it the commuter card!
You may be asking what is the big benefit to this card? Besides not having to dig around for enough change to buy a ticket every time you go to the ferry booth that is. Well, there is a 30% discount on one way tickets! Since one way is all that’s left I’d say that is a pretty large incentive.
How It Works
The commuter card is something like a debit card. There is no fee to purchase the card, you simply put however much money you desire onto the card. Though the initial deposit and each refill must be as of May, 1, 2013: $200.00 minimum. You may refill your card by using cash, check, or credit card at any of the LCT crossing booths when they are open.
Or you may call the Burlington office (802-864-9804) and use a credit card Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm to refill your card. Be wary though, sometimes credit cards may take up to 24 hours to process if you call late in the day.
Also, if for some reason you decide you don’t want the card any more you can return it and get a refund on any money left on the card.
If you happen to lose your card you can replace it for $5.00, and LCT will invalidate your old card (to be sure no one else uses it) and transfer any current money on it onto your new card.
To purchase a rechargable commuter card, download an application and drop it off to one of the LCT ticket booths or mail it to: Lake Champlain Transportation, 1 King Street, Burlington, VT, 05401.
Call 802-864-9804 for more details.
Update
We have been made aware that the commuter card does not have year-long access at the Essex-Charlotte crossing.
It is only good between Charlotte, VT – Essex, NY when Dockmasters are present at the ticket booth.
**Not good for payment on the Charlotte – Essex boat in winter**(LCT)
There are also commuter coupon booklets available.
