Planning for the coming farm season is well under way. An idea we are working on is for Nathan and Racey to raise broiler chickens for the Full and By CSA this season on their new Jersey Street farm. This would be a great way for us to focus more of our work hours on construction and infrastructure this year and hopefully to make a bigger push towards getting the bank barn fully-functional and literally wrapped up against next winter’s (hopefully) snowy weather—complete with doors, windows, siding and repairs to the old slate roof.
One way of expanding the share offerings without expanding our already very long work day is to have a partner farm producing new products that members can pick-up during the regular share hours. Nathan and Racey are exploring turkeys this year and have asked for our members to contact them if you have an interest in pre-ordering a turkey for the holidays. Please write them directly at henderhams@gmail.com to express your interest. Also on their docket is locally grown and pressed sunflower oil.
We are looking at tapping trees in the next few days! It looks like a nice week coming up of cool nights and mild days.
Full and By Farm Shares
In the veggie share: shallots, kohlrabi, rutabaga, turnips, parsnips, cabbage, celeriac, beets, carrots, potatoes, onions, garlic, green kraut, red, white and black beans, and blue corn meal. Still to come: garbanzo beans, sprouts, belgian endive and maple syrup!
In the meat share: beef, pork and stew birds (don’t forget they need long and moist cooking) in the freezer. Lard and leaf lard.
