We are featuring chef Doug’s wheat berry salad for veggie members this evening. Wheat berries are a super nutrient-packed whole grain—tidy little bundles of fiber, protein and iron. They are also delicious and easy to prepare. Add them to soup or chili for a chewy bite, or bake them in your bread for crunch. We’ve been enjoying them most often as a winter salad. The basic recipe is the same but the options are endless, and salad has the added benefit of getting better with each passing day of leftovers. We’ll have a recipe for the prepared salad at pick up, as well as Scottie’s favorite version.
Membership Updates
Membership packets for the summer season, beginning in June, are ready for pick up tonight! Grab one on your way in. To help with our spring planning please return your forms by March 13th. We have updated the membership information including several changes to the structure of the share—most notably details on new and easier, late pick-ups! We still encourage you to join us during regular hours for the freshest veggies, largest selection and to see your farmers and fellow members. Work and life conflicts do arise though and this will allow you to work the share more seamlessly into busy lives.
We’re also introducing a Taste of the Farm vegetable share for community members with smaller appetites or less time spent preparing food at home. This share will offer a selection of three to four items from the week’s fresh produce. Do not worry if you love the free-choice, all-you-can-eat, pick-up. Our original share is still packed with all of the veggies, grains, dry beans and value-added products that you want, and you still do the choosing. The original share also offers extra veggies for freezing and canning when the harvest allows.
The meat share now offers meat by the pound. No more large and small shares, you name the amount that your household will eat in a week. Keep in mind that whole and half chickens are 4 and 2 lbs respectively, calculate those numbers into your weekly poundage. 1 pound shares will be limited in variety since few cuts are packed in such small sizes.
