The Battle for Christmas
How, and even when, Christmas is celebrated has been part of the “culture wars” over the last few centuries. There’s a long road from the 17th century “Lords of Misrule” to jolly old Santa Claus; and from streets full of unruly revelers demanding food and drink to present-day family gatherings. This fun and informative talk will look back at the early, carnival-like holiday season and discuss how we got to the festival of consumerism that predominates today.
