Every Monday we share an Essex photo or artifact on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. This week we’re happy to share this black and white photo dated to about c. 1900-1910. Can you recognize this stretch of waterfront? Of course as this is the Essex Blog what is pictured is the shore of Essex, NY! The photo was taken from Lake Champlain and there is a view of some of the Adirondack Mountains in the distance. But can you identify any specific Essex landmarks or buildings?

I can make out one steeple rising above the treeline toward the right. I believe it is the Baptist Church—as the tower on the Community Church and the (now missing) steeple of the Old Stone Church are square, and St. John’s steeple is too short to be the one I see. Unfortunately, the Baptist church was destroyed in a 1943 fire and that steeple is now forever gone from the Essex skyline.

I believe I see the part of the old Horse Nail Factory on the far right of the photo. Do you agree? That was another Essex building that was lost to fire—although it burned as an earlier date than the church—in 1918. If that building is there that dates the photo before that fire for sure.
