Do you think an Essex hyperlocal weather station is a pipe dream? Even more hyperlocal than our existing Essex, NY Weather Forecast, Facts & Records page? Think again!
Here’s proof that an Essex hyperlocal weather station is no longer pipe dream.
If you haven’t noticed, I’m a little obsessed with all things hyperlocal. Hyperlocal media, hyperlocal gastrotourism, hyperlocal Essex doodling, etc. So I was thrilled to discover from Mark Kimball that Essex Farm has partnered with NYS Mesonet (University at Albany) to enable an Essex, NY hyperlocal weather station.
Our first hyper local weather station… [is] on one of our fields off of Bockhouse Road. ~ Mark Kimball
You heard that right, we now have our very own hyperlocal weather station!
The New York State Mesonet
The NYS Mesonet is a program managed by Dr. Jerry Brotzge at the University at Albany. NYS Mesonet was originally launched with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA-4085-DR-NY), an ongoing support is provided by
- New York State;
- NYS Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services;
- Research Foundation for the State University of New York (SUNY);
- University at Albany, SUNY;
- Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC) at SUNY Albany;
- Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences (DAES) at SUNY Albany.
So what exactly is NYS Mesonet?
A mesonet is a particular type of observing network, with weather stations spaced close enough together to adequately sample “mesoscale” weather. “Meso-” refers to weather phenomena that range in size from less than a mile to hundreds of miles long and last a few minutes to hours… The New York State Mesonet will ultimately consist of 125 state-of-the-art environmental monitoring stations and will serve as the foundation of an Early Warning Severe Weather Detection network for the entire State of New York. Mesonet sites will be distributed statewide with every county across New York having at least one or more sites. The Mesonet will provide local, updated weather information in real-time 24/7 to government, academic, and private sector partners as well as the general public. (Source: NYS Mesonet)
