After serving the Town of Essex for 27 years Highway Superintendent Jim Morgan is retiring. Come celebrate his loyal service (and well earned retirement) at The Whallonsburg Grange on Saturday, September, 21. All are welcome.
This Saturday there will be a retirement party for Jim Morgan, the town’s long-standing highway chief, at the Whallonsburg Grange from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a pot-luck dish to share and a story or two concerning Mr. Morgan, who no doubt has been involved in some amusing incidents during his 27 years working for the town. I regret being out of town and unable to attend this commemorative event. I owe a debt of gratitude to Jim Morgan for helping me out when wife and I first arrived in Essex in 2005. We had purchased Sonny LaPine’s house on Main Street and we were trying to resolve a persistent basement flooding problem.
After exhausting all town resources, I happened to speak with Jim Morgan who calmly, quietly explained the solution. He knew how to restore the basement’s passive drainage because he’d personally helped Sonny out in the past. A couple of years later, when the drainage failed again it was once again Jim Morgan to the rescue. In his understated way, he identified the storm sewer path and access which even town maps overlooked.
In short, I’m sorry to miss the opportunity to celebrate the retirement of one of Essex’s unsung heroes. Jim Morgan, I hope that Saturday your praises are sung by all. Thank you.
