Before I share the discouraging preview of the March blizzard were being told to expect today and tomorrow, let’s first remember that upbeat optimism that we all felt 24 hours ago. Do you remember what it looked like outside your window about this time yesterday? Did you happen to go for a walk outside midday, say sometime between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM?
It felt like spring. Sunny. Warm. Promising… I hope you savored springtime’s promised yesterday, because today we plunge back into winter.
March Blizzard Warning
The National Weather Service is forecasting a major winter storming, with significant enough snowfall expected that there’s a winter storm advisory in effect until 8:00 PM this evening. Here are a few highlights from the most recent warning as of 5:09 AM this morning:
The national weather service in burlington continues the winter storm warning for heavy snow…
- Location: The northern adirondack mountains… Champlain Valley…
- Hazard type: Heavy snow.
- Accumulation: 12 to 20 inches of snow.
- Maximum Snowfall Rate: 1 to 2 inches per hour… Mainly this evening through midnight.
- Timing: Light snow will develop early wednesday morning and increase in intensity by wednesday afternoon and continue into thursday morning.
- Temperatures: Highs around 20. Lows 1 below to 5 above zero.

Sounds like Friday will be a great ski day! But between now and then you may want to hunker down with a good book.
Winter’s Last Hurrah?
One final, substantial dump would be a welcome gift for skiers who have been enduring exceedingly icy conditions recently. And local ski destinations certainly need the extra oomph to wrap up their season in the black. But enjoying the balmy afternoon yesterday I realized just how ready I am for the snow to melt and the snowdrops to bloom. Given the still frozen lake, many anticipate a chilly, late spring. While that may be the case, there’s no harm in hoping this March blizzard will deal winter’s last significant snowfall.
But don’t let your guard down yet. Here’s the advice from our ever vigilant friends at the National Weather Service.
Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. If you must travel… Keep an extra flashlight… A fully charged cell phone… Food… And water in your vehicle in case of an emergency… (weather.com)
I suppose the conventional wisdom would be, “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.” Good luck!
