Essex Storm Sewer Update
Essex County DPW has encountered unanticipated conflicts with the town water line while re-establishing the Begg’s Point Road ditch line. The original plan was to utilize the existing drainages in Essex as much as possible to avoid impacts to the historic district and to save costs. Essex County is now pursuing relocation and installation of a closed storm sewer system under Begg’s Point Road to avoid conflicts with the town water line in the ditch. The relocation of the storm sewer will affect the project and how it will now progress.
- The ditch along Begg’s Point Road will be filled in with a small diameter drainage pipe that will collect the discharge from existing cellar drains.
- The proposed relocation of the new storm sewer will follow the existing sanitary sewer system in an attempt to utilize the existing sanitary sewer excavation. This location is chosen in an attempt to avoid ledge rock and impacts to the historic district.
- Soil exploration along the proposed center line of the new storm sewer will be performed to accurately locate the depth of ledge rock.
- Essex County will contact New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and submit the new proposed plan for that departments review.
- The new plan may require historic review because the plan is outside of existing drainages.
- There will be an additional cost due to the purchase of large diameter pipe to convey the closed storm sewer system.
- There will be a delay in the work. Essex County crews will clean up the site and perform work on other projects until all required permits are received, soil conditions are confirmed and additional materials are on site.
Essex County DPW is committed to repairing the drainage system in the Hamlet of Essex. The new storm sewer will help alleviate several drainage problems in the hamlet as well as reduce pollution and sediment deposition into Lake Champlain.
