About Karate at NEW Health
Shotokan is a Japanese karate system having its origins in the Okinawan Shorin ryu and Shorei ryu styles. The Okinawan schools in turn have origins that include Chinese Kung Fu Wu Shu, primarily White Crane.
The class will be presented in traditional fashion with a formal opening in seiza (kneeling) and recitation of the dojo kun (creed). Following a brief meditation, the instructor will lead the class in a physical warm up and basic drills. The middle section of the class will be spent learning kata (forms). The end of the class will deal with self-defense and—at the instructor’s discretion—controlled sparring. (NEW Health)
