“Even if you can’t draw, do a little doodle or rip an illustration from a magazine – these visuals will help bring your idea to life.” ~ John Emmerling
I love this quotation from ad man turned innovation guru, John Emmerling. If you’re still waiting for permission, your wish is granted. Even if you can’t draw. Or think you can’t draw… Because, everyone can draw. Perhaps more like Mondrian than Degas. Maybe more like Athens, the famous Salvador Doggie?
You can draw. You can doodle. And a little doodle is the perfect way to start. Easier to keep secret, to hide quickly when the Efficiency Police swing by. In fact, a really little doodle can get stuffed into your wallet or behind your ear. Well, maybe not behind your ear. It might attract further attention that way.
Start with an idea that you associate with Essex, NY. A feeling. An event. A view. A sound. And as you ponder this Essex idea pick up a pen or pencil. Or a paintbrush-ball if your you’re inspired by Athens. Anything with which to scrawl a few quick lines. And before you remember that you can’t draw, do a little doodle of your idea. Don’t judge it. Just tuck it away. As a reminder that you can draw. You can.
And it just might inspire you to doodle again. Soon.
And as for that other idea Emmerling mentions, ripping an idea from a magazine, I’ll explain how to “doodlebomb” soon!
