UNDERGROUND RAILROAD EXPERIENCE
Saturday, November 23rd
starts promptly at 6:00 pm,
ends at approximately 9:00 pm
Cost: $5 per person. Ages 10+ welcome.
Share in an re-enactment of one of our most popular living history courses and become a player of the story. Travel the route of freedom seekers (former slaves) as they made their way through New York, trying to make it to Canada before being captured by slave-catchers. A brief introduction at the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center will present the controversy of slavery in America and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
Afterward, you’ll be shuttled to the 1812 Homestead and the journey begins! Make your way from one safe-house to another as you try to escape slave-catchers and meet famous abolitionists along the road to freedom. After the simulation, a guided informal discussion and presentation on local Underground Railroad history will take place at the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center, followed by a campfire, hot cocoa, and s’mores under the stars!
This year’s Underground Railroad Experience is presented in part by the North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association and is being hosted at the 1812 Homestead in Willsboro, New York.
Please meet at 6pm for the beginning of the program at the Pok-O-MacCready Outdoor Education Center (1391 Reber Road, Willsboro, NY, 12996). Shuttles will be provided to the 1812 Homestead. Event will occur rain or shine (or snow)!
