      Spaniards at Reber Rock

August 28, 2014 By Reber Rock Farm Leave a Comment

I’m María, a 20-year-old girl from Madrid, journalism student, and through the coincidences of life met Nathan Henderson, a long time ago.

Nate met my older brother Pablo in Madrid, studying Geology, and they struck up a good friendship during that year that he “lived” almost full time at my house.

Over time they kept in touch and Nate was in our lives like one of my family; sharing vacation, food, stories and songs that I still remember almost 10 years later. And as a good adopted Spaniard, he has take care of my brother every time he came to USA and now he has had to take care of me.

This is how me (a city girl who the most she has done in the field is take a walk), came to this community of young people wanting to change society today and make a difference in this farming community.

I’ve been here about 3 weeks, and Racey, the lovely fiancée of my half brother Nate, asked me to share my adventures of farming from the perspective of a city girl and journalist. So, this is my way of sharing with the world my experiences, because pictures say more than a thousand words and my time here is very limited.

My first week here was with my brother Pablo, of whom I have spoken before, and his girlfriend Belén. And these are some of the images that define our early days of American stay.

(Get ready to practice your spanish! Or just read the English captions under the spanish…)

My humble home for the next 6 weeks.
Knowing the farm and all its corners, amazing little pigs!
One of the things that surprised me most is the beautiful sunset each night in the Adirondacks. And of course the views… indescribable.
We started the garlic harvest adventure with a smile.
We will never look at garlic in Spanish markets in the same way after the effort, sweat and almost tears we’ve shed to remove it.
One of the first jobs, “remove the bad plants” (how we say in Spanish to weed a field)!! I never thought I would fully appreciate the phrase, bad plant, until I got to the farm.
Every day, the chores, are the farmers’ tasks like going to visit the chickens, and these are the delicious eggs that we sell in the store and we have for breakfast almost every morning.
But it’s not all hard work, we also have some time on Thursday night to go out and celebrate, in this case, the birthday of my brother Pablo. We enjoyed listening to Taylor Haskins at the Soundwaves concert in Wesport.
A new day, much to cultivate, and Sarah, along with Chad and Nate, are responsible for driving the horses.
More labels to sell new products: maple candy.
