The Wannabes were drawn together by a love of singing in harmony and a desire to play “our own ‘roots music’: songs that speak to struggles for justice, human rights, and peace and lift the spirit. As younger women, we all secretly “wanted to be” the folk singers we grew up listening to. We like a good story and lyrics and always encourage singing along. The songs may be familiar but we interpret them in our own unique way.”
Mary-Nell Bochman carried a guitar around in her heart for many years. Now she plays and sings with the Wannabes and her heart is a lot lighter.
Katharine Preston wanted to be singer-peace activist Joan Baez. Forty years later she is happy voicing harmony and inspirational lyrics hoping to move hearts and minds.
Judy Ross grew up singing (and dancing) on her family’s Adirondack camp porch. Her dad played guitar while family and friends sang along. Now she is delighted to ‘share the porch’ with Mary-Nell, Donna, and Katharine.
Donna Lou Sonnet grew up as the youngest of a musical family in western Pennsylvania. Self-taught on the guitar from age 14, she really wanted to be Mary Travers of “Peter, Paul and Mary” fame. She dedicates her present musical journey with “The Wannabes” to the memory of her mom and brother – her two all-time favorite singing buddies.
