The Upper Saranac Foundation (USF) has been awarded $142,522 in state funding through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Invasive Species Grant Program (ISGP) – Round 4, supporting two priority projects to combat aquatic invasive species and restore native habitat in the Upper Saranac watershed.
USF was one of only five North Country recipients selected as part of a $5.1 million statewide initiative announced by DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton, funding 51 projects aimed at reducing the environmental and economic impacts of invasive species across New York.
“These projects reflect a strategic, science-based approach to protecting water quality and ecosystem health across the Upper Saranac watershed,” said USF Executive Director Guy Middleton. “By combining rapid response with long-term restoration, we are making meaningful, lasting investments in the health of our lakes and surrounding ecosystems.”
Funded projects include:
- Fish Creek AIS Control Project ($61,496): USF will conduct targeted, non-chemical removal of Eurasian and variable-leaf watermilfoil at the Fish Creek Public Campground. This high-use area presents an elevated risk for the spread of invasive species to connected waterways. The project will reduce infestation levels, protect downstream waters, and support ongoing prevention and education efforts.
- Follensby Clear Pond Restoration Project ($81,026): Building on prior successful control efforts, USF will restore native aquatic vegetation — specifically Vallisneria americana (wild celery) — to improve habitat complexity, stabilize sediments, enhance water clarity, and increase resistance to future invasions.
Together, these projects represent a comprehensive, watershed-scale approach — integrating prevention, control, and ecological restoration — to protect one of the Adirondacks’ most valued freshwater systems.
These projects have been funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Invasive Species Grant Program, through appropriations from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF).
