Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Take a look at this old photograph! Do you recognize the location? Any of the men in the photo? When do you think it was taken? (Hint: This is not in Essex, but a neighboring town.)
Here’s what the community already had to say:
Glenn Estus: Champlain National Bank, Westport. Vault is still in the same place
Dianne Lansing: Glen is probably right. I was going to say Champlain National in Willsboro.
Derinda Sherman: For sure it is Westport. Back in the day when banks looked like banks. Wish it still had that look.
Jean White Dickerson: I thought that too
Ed Mason: Old Willsboro Bank….next to the Paine Memorial Library….possibly Peter Paine Sr….in the photo?
Barbara Wrisley: Looks like the Westport Branch of Essex County Champlain National to me.
Rob Degroff: Looks like inside the front of the old Essex County Champlain National Bank in Westport, NY.
Ann Dickinson: I wish the bank was still open there so we could see the inside!
Jacqueline Hallock: The Bank IS still open and is in this same building as it was in 1916!! Anyone can see the same vault door as seen in this picture by visiting us on Main Street! 😀
Here’s some more detailed information about the photo that was told to me by Jacqueline Hallock who shared this photo with us:
“It’s from 1916 and shows the interior of our branch in Westport, which was the Lake Champlain National Bank (where we got our name). The three men pictures are Alvin Burt, Ralph Torrance, and Ralph Vaughan from left to right. I’m always amazed by this picture because of the three piece suits, the fact that it only depicts men, and the way the old bank was decorated.”
