Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Thanks to Rick and Karen Dalton for sharing the photo above with us!
Do you recognize the scene in this old photograph? Where is it? What do you recognize? When do you think this was taken?
Dianne Lansing: I’m guessing….is it from inside the movie theater, looking out? I think it was taken in the winter 🙂
Diane is exactly right! This photo was taken looking out the doors of the former movie theater onto a wintry Main Street scene. I’m guessing that the double-doors (that no longer remain) were a key clue to the building’s identification.
This building was completed in 1937, and the movie theater premiered its first film in 1940. Do you remember the movie theater? Do you know when it closed?
Today the building houses the Post Office and College for Every Student (CFES) offices.
Share any insights you have and/or your memories of the theater in the comment section below!
