Frequently we share a different historic image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
This time we shared an aerial view of Essex, NY. We asked if anyone could estimate the date of it and point out anything that has changed. Here are some comments from the community:
Tina Hanchett- Gardner: I don’t see the manhole for the water pump house at Beggs or the pump house, no water tower either, so I will say this photo is from 70’s or earlier.
Essex Supervisor Ken Hughes: That’s an older ferry I think.
Peter Cross: I believe this was taken in the 70’s. I can see the house on the hill beyond the marina. I think is called Bluff Point, I could be wrong. Anyway that house burned down in the late 70s early 80s.
Wendy Schmitt: Masons point
Cathy Van de Mark: Beautiful
Kristen Terpstra: The old dock isn’t red
Maris Noble: Old Dock is not red!
Below is the backside of the postcard. It was never sent, but it is labeled as “Historic Essex, New York Essex Ferry, Old Dock Coffee House and Essex Marina.”

I still have three of these. I think it’s late 70’s. Best of all, Essex hasn’t changed much, except for a coat of paint here and there and a ferry upgrade, accompanied by increased rates.
