Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The last image we shared is shown above, although we cropped off its captions!
Do you recognize any landmarks on this vintage postcard? Any insights you can share? Here’s just a bit of what the community already had to say:
Jean White Dickerson: Are those landslides on Giant???
John Bottiroli: The golf course at Ausable Club.??
Joanne Mazzotte: St Hubert’s – (Keene valley, NY)
Alexandra Noble: Ausable Club!
Bobbi Degnan Atz: Craig Wood golf course.
Roger Bartlett: Not too vintage, those slides happened in the early 60’s on the day I was coming home from Boys’ State. I believe that was 1963.
Bucky Hathaway: Ausable Club
As usual the community correctly identifies the location and landmarks! The captions help clarify, and on this postcard there are two captions on the front. One reads: “(Ausable Lake Club), Keene Valley, NY, Adirondack Mts.” The other reads: “The “Giant” (4622 ft.) as seen from St. Hubert’s—29 AD.” So we’re looking at Giant Mountain from the Ausable Lake Club, which is in Keene Valley, NY. Not sure if St. Hubert’s is another mountain we can see in the background, or if the club is on that mountain, which the phrasing of the caption implies.
The back side of the postcard is below, although it was never sent so there is no postage date to help us narrow the time-frame this postcard dates to.
