Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Does anyone recognize the location in this photo? (Did you recognize it before you noticed the title along the bottom?!) It’s at the Crater Club in Essex, NY.
Although which building at the club is featured? What can you tell us about it? Do you have any memories to share? When do you think the photo was taken?
Here’s what the community had to share:
Matt C. Morian: Is this the one by the clay tennis courts? For some reason I remember it as being part 2 story. I do remember the clay courts; having to pull up the boundary tapes and pushing the roller over the courts for, it seemed endless hours (in the mid 50’s). There was and probably still is a meeting house at the dock. Thanks for the memories.
Bill Knaus: The club house at the Crater Club was and is the focal point of the club. I am told that when it was first built it served a multitude of purposes. None of the original camps in the club had kitchens, so this is where you had all of your meals. It also housed a post office.
Bob Ellis: In the late 60s the post office was converted to a hangout for kids. Our parents thought we were safe. “Dart coming cross court!” stuck in my neck.
Dudley Underdahl Duel: The Crater Club clubhouse! Lots of memories!
Charlotte Hoffman Van Duser: That was an easy one …best place aside from Burnham’s!
Emilie Budd: That is the clubhouse at the Crater Club. Too embarrassed to share any memories.
Bob Ellis: The trees are a lot bigger now, and the roof line is sagging.
Eve Ticknor: My mother, Ethel Potts Bernard, used to tell me stories of going to dances at the Crater Club, in that building in the photo, when she was much younger.

You can see the back of the postcard to the right. Click on the photo to enlarge it. It doesn’t offer any other helpful information besides the manufacturer along the center (identified in the image caption credit).
