Frequently we share a different historic image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Do you recognize this Essex street? Which is it? How has it changed compared with today? Recognize any buildings? The caption along the bottom is faint, but I’m pretty sure it reads: “Drive along shore, Essex on Lake Champlain, NY”.
Here is what the community had to say:
Dianne B Lansing: I think it is Essex Road just north of the ferry dock. Does not seem paved in this photo.
Tilly Close: Isn’t that Greystone??
James X. Bishop: Right. That’s the old McNulty house.
I do agree that this is likely Essex Road/Lakeshore Road just north of the ferry dock. I’m not sure which house is most clearly seen though. Which do you think it is? Is that Greystone or Rosslyn? Or even Sunnyside/Harmon Noble House? All three have similar facades. I believe from the design of the eaves/cornice that it may be Greystone.
Below is the back side of this postcard. There is not much information there as it was never mailed. There is some writing in pencil with some dates and locations on the left, but I don’t think that has anything to do with the postcard and are likely someone’s notes. Along the top, although up-side-down looks to be the date July 1922 perhaps?
