Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The postcard above we shared with the public last week.
Do you recall riding on the ferry in the photo? The writing on the side reads “Charlotte-Essex” and the title of the postcard is the same as well. I’m assuming that was the name of the ferry, unless in the past ferries were only labeled with their crossing location?
Have you ever seen this ferry before? When was it in operation? I doubt it continues to cruise the lake today, unless it was re-purposed or restored in some way. Do you know where it is now or what happened to it?
What changes do you note in comparison to how the ferry dock in Essex appears today? Is it is a different location? When do you think this photo was taken?
Sylvia Margo: 1915…??
Dianne Lansing: I think this ferry is docked on the south side of The Old Dock restaurant.
Matt C. Morian: Great old photo to have in your archives, but maybe , sadly to say, not many people left to remember and answer questions.
If this is truly a photo of the ferry when it was located on the other side of the wharf to the South, that is probably the Old Dock building in the background. I think that is likely as the shape looks very similar. What do you think? Do you know when the shift to the North occurred?
